Instant messaging and telephone app, free to use via the internet
Description:
The free to use communication platform enabled Admiral Nurses to support carers of people with dementia during the pandemic, particularly when there were several carers involved, keeping up to date with family members all in one message group. Carers with concerns could share images of the patient's skin condition, injuries, weight-loss or any other issues, and get advice.
Barriers:
Nurses and carers need a suitable device, digital literacy to use the app, and access to the internet. The app was used as part of nurses' increased use of remote communications technologies, and the organisation had to update their equipment to host video calls and similar systems.
Enablers:
Permission was given by the nurses' organisation to download the app. The app proved empowering for carers who gained information and advice from nurses. Through using this technology, nursing expertise and reassurance is more readily available to carers.
Outcomes for patient:
The app was part of several measures for supporting carers during the pandemic. Videos were also provided via a website explaining in a dementia-friendly way why people could not go out during the pandemic. In some instances, carers are now using remote communication technology to stay in touch with nurses, rather than having home visits.
