Nursing and Digital Technologies

Remote, online meetings for patients

Description:
Among patients with mental health and addiction issues, group therapy sessions moved to an online format. This produced problems for some of the patients both in accessing and then using the technology.
Barriers:
Some patients were not comfortable using the camera function, worried about being overheard by family members, or had low digital literacy/no access to a device or the internet. Staff members require digital literacy to facilitate online meetings.
Enablers:
Patients who had access to the internet and a device were able to maintain continuity of their care.
Outcomes for patient:
Patients who had the digital resources and were comfortable moving to an online format were able to attend online therapy sessions and continue receiving vital help and care.
