Nursing and Digital Technologies

Electronic patient record

Description:
A bespoke EPR that contains patients’ information, care plans and assessments in one place. The EPR has been developed over several years, with the pandemic expediting its development. The EPR was able to record Covid-related data such as if a patient is infected, which can inform infection prevention. This technology reduces the need for paper documents.
Barriers:
The potential for differing levels of digital literacy among nurses. Hardware availability.
Enablers:
Clinicians have been consulted and involved in the design and refining of the technology. Training videos educate staff in EPR use.
Outcomes for patient:
Improved patient data management that is rapidly updated to reflect a patient's current condition. Patients are escalated and identified as at risk much earlier.
