Nursing and Digital Technologies

Electronic observations

Description:
A tablet and desktop interface to record hospitalised patients' vital signs. Provides an at-a-glance overview of a patient's condition. This technology was rolled-out at pace during the pandemic to manage patient data efficiently, replacing paper-based records.
Barriers:
Sufficient time and digital literacy for staff to learn to use the technology. The interface was initially overloaded with information during busy times.
Enablers:
Saves time, more efficient than paper records. Gives a rapid account of patient acuity and an accurate National Early Warnings Score. Improves clinical safety.
Outcomes for patient:
Improved care management of patients, standardised recording of vital signs, automatic calculation of EWS scores.
