Nursing and Digital Technologies

Automated Planner

Description:
A digitised visit allocation system. This replaces a senior nurse who would check case notes and allocate staff to visit housebound patients. The Planner is already part of the EPR. Staff enter details such as location and treatment needs of the patient, then the system matches an appropriate nurse to the visit.
Barriers:
Dependent on staff availability, nurses with specific skills may still need to travel to patients across dispersed areas. Where demand significantly exceeds capacity, the planner is unable to safely prioritise work.
Enablers:
During the pandemic, staff were given online support via screen sharing while learning to use the system. As the planner is already part of the EPR, staff had some familiarity with elements of the system.
Outcomes for patient:
Appropriately skilled nursing staff are allocated to provide patient care.
